The iconic image of the Inca city of Machu Picchu is inextricably linked to Peru. The diverse landscape consists of a part of Amazon rainforest, the highlands of the Andes but also a stone and sand desert. This South American country is largely dependent on the export of fish and fishmeal, silver, copper, oil and, to a lesser extent, agricultural crops such as coffee, sugar, cotton, coca leaves, asparagus and other vegetables.
About a quarter of the population is engaged in agriculture and fisheries. Some 22% of Peruvians live below the poverty line. In the inhospitable Andes mountains, the land is arid and water is scarce. Most of the people living here are farmers who cultivate for their own use. Large-scale mining pollutes a great deal of water and land. Young people are fleeing the rural areas in large numbers in order to try their luck in the cities.
