This Asian country is made up of no fewer than 14,572 islands that are home to many natural resources. For example, the country has large reserves of coal, oil, natural gas, bauxite, copper, tin and nickel. Trade has also always been important and 45% of the population lives off agriculture. Indonesia is a major exporter of coffee, tea, rice, cocoa, spices, copra, palm oil, tobacco and rubber.
Wealth in Indonesia is unevenly distributed. Some 16% of the population lives below the poverty line. There are hundreds of ethnic groups who do not always live together peacefully. Natural disasters (volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tidal waves) also present a challenge.
